In historic Jeddah, Abdulrahman the calligrapher knows how to turn writing a name into a story worth carrying home by the visitor. He sits with his letters and writes the names of those coming from different countries and languages in Arabic. Through these encounters, his connection with people has grown to the point where writing in front of them has become a prominent aspect of his artistic experience and a reason for his name to be associated with the place where he was raised and practiced his talent among its neighborhoods.
"Historic Jeddah is my second home," says the calligrapher. This phrase encapsulates years of presence and participation in the events of "Al-Balad" since 2014, especially during the month of Ramadan when he is keen to bring joy to both young and old by writing directly in front of them. Among the event visitors, he also pays attention to the cleaning workers, stemming from his belief that calligraphy and art are for everyone and that uplifting spirits is one of the greatest acts of devotion to God.
His relationship with words began early. He memorized the entire Quran by the age of eleven and became one of the winners of the local King Salman Quran memorization competition at the national level. He also won the competition for the most beautiful recitation and voice at the educational offices in Jeddah. His journey has combined an interest in reciting the Quranic text and caring for the beauty of its writing, both of which accompanied him in learning, competing, and refining his relationship with the Arabic language.
In the holy mosque in Mecca, he studied under masters of Arabic calligraphy and attended courses held there. He then found in historic Jeddah a space to practice what he learned and showcase his experience to a diverse audience. In 2016, Al-Madina newspaper described him as the youngest calligrapher participating in the historic Jeddah festival, an early indication of his presence among the participants and his commitment to ensuring that calligraphy has a place in events open to the public.
From 2017 to 2022, he worked as a private calligrapher with the late artist Hisham Binjabi in his museum in historic Jeddah. This phase added years of work alongside an artist whose name is associated with the Saudi artistic scene, while the calligrapher continued his participation in official national events and cultural activities with various organizations within the Kingdom.
He won first place in Arabic calligraphy competitions in Jeddah for three consecutive years and also won the 1444 AH award in the University of Jeddah's Quranic calligraphy competition, which included universities and schools in the Makkah region. Alongside the awards, he turned to training, offering workshops for elementary and middle school students in Jeddah to improve their handwriting, as well as a workshop for international students at King Abdulaziz University.
Abdulrahman the calligrapher's experience is distributed between learning, competing, training, and participating, but writing people's names remains one of his closest works to the public. In the name he writes for a foreign tourist, there is an opportunity to introduce the beauty of Arabic letters, and in his attention to a cleaning worker, there is a practical expression of the meaning he gives to his art. Thus, the features of a calligrapher who found his audience and story in "Al-Balad" become clear, making his talent a gateway to communication and bringing happiness to others.
