U.S. technology stocks suffered sharp losses during trading yesterday (Thursday), wiping out nearly $2.5 trillion from the market value of companies listed on the Nasdaq index, amid a broad sell-off triggered by concerns about the future of massive investments in artificial intelligence and the expansion of data centers.
Nasdaq Enters Correction Territory
The Nasdaq Composite Index fell by 5.5%, marking its worst daily performance in nearly 18 months, closing at 24,315 points, and entering correction territory after declining more than 10% from its highest levels recorded last October.
Nvidia Leads Losses in Chip Companies
Semiconductor companies led the wave of losses, with Nvidia's stock dropping by more than 9%, while shares of AMD, Micron, and SanDisk experienced even greater losses, amid sell-offs affecting companies linked to the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The declines extended to the rest of Wall Street indices, with the S&P 500 index falling by 4.4%, while the Dow Jones lost nearly 1,833 points, equivalent to 3.4% of its value.
Concerns Over Tightening Regulations on Data Centers
The sell-off followed the Democratic Party's victory in gaining control of both houses of Congress in the midterm elections, raising investor fears of stricter regulatory constraints on the establishment of data centers, especially amid growing local objections to their significant consumption of electricity and water.
AI Investments Under Pressure
Concerns also increased regarding companies' ability to achieve returns commensurate with the billions they are spending on artificial intelligence technologies, coinciding with rising financing costs and tightening borrowing conditions, which threaten the expansion plans of smaller companies operating data centers.
These losses reflect a shift in investor sentiment towards the artificial intelligence sector, after optimistic growth forecasts had driven technology stocks to record levels in recent months.
