While the U.S. Central Command confirmed the continued flow of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the foreign ministers of Egypt and Pakistan called today (Sunday) for the resumption of the implementation of the "Islamabad" memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran.
The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdel Atti, and his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq, emphasized the importance of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable agreement that enhances regional security and stability, and prevents the escalation of conflict in the region. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the communication between the two ministers discussed assessments regarding regional issues and the efforts made to contain escalation and restore calm.
Ongoing Regional Consultation
The statement clarified that the communication took place within the framework of "the mutual interest in continuous coordination and consultation regarding regional developments." The Egyptian Foreign Ministry noted that the two ministers agreed on "the necessity of continuing close consultation and coordination during the upcoming phase, at the bilateral level and within the framework of the mechanism of the four regional parties, to support joint efforts to enhance security and stability in the region." The memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 collapsed, and its validity expired in August, amid dwindling hopes for a near agreement between the two sides, with renewed military confrontations.
The U.S. forces threatened to target Iranian shadow ships if any American ship was attacked, confirming that they targeted three Iranian oil tankers in response to the Revolutionary Guard firing ballistic missiles at two U.S. warships that were patrolling in the territorial waters, one of which was an aircraft carrier and the other a destroyer equipped with guided missiles.
Israeli Concerns Over Imminent Attack
At the same time, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf hinted at Iran's escalation of attacks, stating: "The rules of the game have changed." Meanwhile, Israeli reports indicated expectations of Iran launching a wide and coordinated attack against Israel on multiple fronts simultaneously, noting that the scenario resembles October 7, but unites all factions of what is called the "Iranian axis" in a unified operation. Israeli assessments reported that Tehran seeks to integrate its forces' response with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas, the Houthis in Yemen, and its allied militias in Iraq into a single campaign, according to what was reported by the "Jerusalem Post."
The newspaper quoted Israeli military officials as saying that coordination between Hezbollah, Iran, and the Houthis to increase their activities began in recent weeks.
