Palestine, during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, was not merely a fixed issue in Saudi politics, but transformed into one of the most prominent fields of the Kingdom's diplomatic presence, from defending Palestinian rights to pushing for an international path that makes the establishment of a Palestinian state a feasible goal.
Consistency of Position.. and Accumulation of Initiatives
Building on a solid Saudi legacy, King Salman maintained the centrality of the Palestinian issue, affirming that a just peace is the path to regional stability, and that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The roots of this vision trace back to the initiative proposed by the Kingdom at the Beirut Summit in 2002, when it presented a comprehensive settlement concept adopted by the Arab Summit, making the "Arab Peace Initiative" a reference for the solution based on ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state in exchange for peace and normal relations.
During King Salman's reign, this approach continued as a fixed policy, gradually transitioning from proposing principles to building movements and coalitions capable of defending them in international forums.
From Gaza to Activating the International Path
With the outbreak of the Gaza war, the Saudi role emerged in leading an Arab and Islamic movement that links the cessation of hostilities with the launch of a genuine political horizon. The Kingdom chaired the joint Arab-Islamic ministerial committee concerned with developments in the sector, and participated in the legal and diplomatic international efforts defending Palestinian rights.
In September 2024, the ministerial committee, chaired by Saudi Arabia, launched the "International Coalition for Implementing the Two-State Solution," marking a significant shift from affirming the principle of the solution to rallying countries around mechanisms for its implementation.
King Salman.. Steadfast Leadership and Developing the Path
Under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and with close follow-up from Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi movement transitioned to a broader international level, through the Kingdom's co-chairing with France of the high-level international conference to resolve the Palestinian issue and implement the two-state solution.
This initiative confirmed that the Saudi position does not merely seek to maintain the reference of the Arab Peace Initiative, but aims to transform it into an international political path. The conference in September 2025 resulted in the adoption of the "New York Declaration" by a majority of 142 countries in the United Nations General Assembly, which enhanced international momentum towards the two-state solution.
Thus, during King Salman's reign, a clear Saudi equation towards Palestine was embodied: steadfastness on rights, a refusal to bypass the Palestinian state, and diplomatic movement to shape the path, which made Saudi support for the cause transcend the limits of political stance to an attempt to build international consensus that ultimately leads to an independent Palestinian state, placing just peace at the heart of regional security and stability.
