U.S. President Donald Trump announced yesterday (Friday) that an agreement has been reached between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, which he said grants Washington "permanent control" over the security of the island, while Denmark confirmed that the agreement preserves its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Trump stated via his platform "Truth Social" that the agreement ensures the United States has the permanent ability to take necessary actions to secure and defend Greenland, noting that the agreement has no expiration date according to Reuters.
Larger U.S. Military Presence
Trump clarified that the United States will begin the process of developing a significant military presence in Greenland, emphasizing that the agreement prevents Washington's adversaries from establishing bases or military presence on the island or undertaking sensitive investments there without written U.S. approval.
Reuters reported a U.S. State Department official stating that the agreement prohibits non-NATO countries from establishing bases in Greenland and grants the United States permanent rights of access, stationing, and flight, which will remain in effect even if Greenland becomes an independent country in the future.
Denmark Affirms Its Sovereignty
For her part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the anticipated agreement enhances collective security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region, while simultaneously recognizing the sovereignty of the Kingdom and its territorial integrity, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said that the agreement recognizes Greenland's interests and its status in international cooperation.
The United States, Denmark, and Greenland are expected to officially sign the agreement next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, before completing the necessary parliamentary procedures for it to come into effect.
