Days after tensions escalated between Moscow and NATO regarding the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw military maneuvers involving thousands of soldiers and Chinese forces in the Ural Mountains region yesterday, Friday, to counter "external aggression."
Participation of 47,000 Soldiers
Putin visited a shooting range in the Chelyabinsk region to monitor the final phase of the "Center-2026" exercises of the Russian forces. The drills coincided with the "Interaction-2026" maneuvers conducted by member states of the "Collective Security Treaty Organization," a security alliance led by Russia, which includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Armenia.
Putin stated in remarks broadcast by state television that more than 47,000 soldiers participated in the strategic "Center-2026" exercises, which were held at 11 training grounds, noting that some were conducted in the Caspian Sea, aimed at developing leadership skills in response to "external aggression." He added that about 6,000 soldiers from Russia and other countries participated in the final phase of the exercises at the Chebarkulsky range, mentioning the presence of delegations from 55 countries as observers.
Previously Scheduled Maneuvers
The Associated Press reported that military units from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, along with forces from China, Mongolia, and Pakistan, participated in the maneuvers. Bloomberg quoted Putin during his visit to the Chelyabinsk region as saying that the forces used new military equipment and benefited from experiences gained during the fighting in Ukraine. Putin inspected a range of weapons, including the new "Giran" drones, which are powered by jet engines and used by the Russian army against Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the maneuvers were pre-scheduled and were not conducted in response to current threats at the borders, according to the Russian news agency TASS. According to the Kremlin, the exercises began on September 28 and are scheduled to conclude today (Saturday).
Russian Warning to NATO
Putin's inspection of the maneuvers came after Russia warned NATO that it would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to defend Kaliningrad, the Russian region on the Baltic Sea, should any member of the alliance attempt to isolate the western Russian enclave from the rest of the country. Russia accused the alliance in a document sent to it and reviewed by Reuters of following a "dangerous and reckless path" that involves "high risks of direct armed conflict." The document stated that this includes the possibility of "Russia launching strikes on decision-making centers in the member states of the alliance as soon as conflict breaks out." The diplomatic document noted that "Russia would be prepared to use its entire arsenal of forces and capabilities, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO countries made any attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country."
The warning highlights Russia's deep concern over what it perceives as an increasing threat from the alliance to Kaliningrad, a heavily fortified military region located between Poland and Lithuania.
