The United Kingdom has announced additional defensive military support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The British Ministry of Defence stated in a statement on Tuesday that these aircraft will operate in a defensive role.
Under this support, the UK will conduct defensive air missions using Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters to protect Saudi cities and vital national infrastructure from aerial attacks.
The UK will provide a military transport aircraft of the type "A400M" to support the transport of defensive equipment within Saudi Arabia, along with British military advisors.
According to the ministry's statement, this support extends the existing defensive military contribution of the UK in Saudi Arabia, which includes the deployment of air defense equipment to protect against missiles and drones, in addition to extending air-to-air refueling support for Saudi defensive air operations, including degrading Houthi military targets in Yemen that threaten both the Saudi and Yemeni people.
The UK emphasized that Houthi attempts to destabilize the region and undermine the security of the Middle East are unacceptable, stressing that this "reckless" behavior exacerbates the already devastating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and that it is in the economic and security interest of the UK for these attempts to fail, according to the Ministry of Defence statement.
It warned that escalating violence in the Gulf could have serious repercussions on the UK domestic front, including rising living costs, disruption of energy supplies, and losses for British companies, as well as its devastating impact on civilians in Yemen.
In this context, the UK firmly condemned the Houthi attacks on civilian targets such as King Khalid International Airport, affirming that both Saudi Arabia and Yemen have the right to defend themselves.
British Defence Minister Ben Wallace stated: "The ongoing attacks by the Houthis on our ally Saudi Arabia are completely unacceptable, and the targeting of Riyadh airport in particular shows the lengths to which the Houthis will go to escalate the situation in the region."
He added: "That is why I have approved additional British military support today, as Typhoon fighters will conduct defensive air missions to help protect Saudi airspace from drones and missiles, complementing the equipment and personnel already present in the country to defend against Houthi aerial attacks."
