Durgham Halsa, one of the survivors of the armed attack that targeted mourners inside the church courtyard in the town of Hamoud in Jordan's Karak Governorate, revealed details of the bloody moments he experienced during the funeral of a female family member, confirming that the heavy gunfire caught the mourners off guard just minutes after their arrival, resulting in fatalities and dozens of injuries, while parts of the church were damaged.
Halsa stated in exclusive remarks to “Okaz” that family members headed to the church around 2 PM to participate in the funeral, explaining that the attack occurred about 10 minutes after he entered the church courtyard, when attendees were surprised by intense gunfire from automatic weapons targeting those present directly.
He added that the gunfire caused chaos and panic among the mourners, who found themselves facing a sudden attack during the funeral proceedings, noting that the number of victims, according to his estimate, reached 7 dead and 24 injured.
“If it weren't for divine providence, I would have been among the dead”
The survivor recalled the moments he escaped death, saying: “If it weren't for divine providence, I would have been among the dead,” explaining that he was sitting on a chair inside the church courtyard at the moment of the attack, while his cousin was standing, before he fell victim to the gunfire.
Halsa confirmed that the gunmen fired at the mourners from the church courtyard, without entering the building, describing what happened as one of the most tragic events witnessed in Karak Governorate.
Circulating narratives about the identity of the gunmen
Regarding the identity of the attackers, Halsa pointed to circulating discussions about their affiliation with the extremist current, and that they had been detained by Jordanian security forces before being released about three months ago, according to what has been reported, noting that they hail from a neighboring village.
It has not been possible to independently verify information related to the identity of the attackers or their security backgrounds, while these narratives remain in need of confirmation from the relevant official authorities.
