The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar in Egypt, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, renewed his strong condemnation of the ongoing Houthi attacks targeting Mecca and Medina and their surroundings, as well as civilian facilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, emphasizing Al-Azhar's absolute rejection of anything that would violate the sanctity of the holy sites or endanger the security of the Kingdom and the safety of its citizens and visitors.
Al-Azhar clarified, in a statement today (Monday), that the latest of these assaults were the attacks directed towards Mecca and Medina, which Saudi defenses managed to intercept near the holy sites, reiterating its demand for an immediate cessation of these assaults, and the preservation of the sanctity of the holy places and the protection of the Kingdom's security and the safety of everyone living on its land or visiting it.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif affirmed its condemnation of the Houthi attacks that have come very close to the courtyards of the Two Holy Mosques and the land of the holy sites, stressing that these areas are sacred and that God has prohibited aggression against them, ensuring the safety of everyone living on their land, including humans, animals, and plants, in addition to the visitors from the guests of God, and the safe residents and workers there.
Al-Azhar pointed out that these attacks represent sinful aggressions and provoke the feelings of nearly two billion Muslims around the world, in addition to being an aggression against the country that oversees the affairs of these holy places, which hold a cherished place in the hearts of all Muslims.
In a related context, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif renewed its call for the urgent formation of a mediation and de-escalation committee, comprising representatives from the wise and rational members of the nation who love goodness, peace, and stability, to work on defusing the crises and conflicts that are igniting, and to end the existing disputes among the followers of the same religion and the same nation.
Al-Azhar emphasized the importance of urgent action to contain the disputes that threaten the security and stability of nations, and to work on enhancing opportunities for de-escalation and peace, in a way that preserves the strength and sovereignty of Arabs and Muslims, protects the blood of their children, and safeguards the resources of their peoples and the rights of future generations.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif concluded by expressing its hope for serious and swift action from the wise and rational members of the nation to contain the existing crises, and to prioritize the language of dialogue and mediation, which contributes to protecting the security and stability of the region, preserving the resources of Arab and Islamic peoples, and maintaining the sanctity of the holy places and their status among Muslims worldwide.
