Damascus rejected the Jordanian bombing that targeted sites in southern Syria, resulting in casualties and injuries, asserting that it cannot be accepted under any pretext, and announcing the work to form a joint field and security committee with Amman to prevent the recurrence of such operations.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stated in a statement on Tuesday that the airstrikes that hit sites in Daraa Governorate were carried out without prior coordination, considering them a violation of Syrian sovereignty and the principles of good neighborliness, and inconsistent with the frameworks of joint security cooperation between the two countries.
The ministry added that the bombing resulted in fatalities and injuries, expressing its condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded, emphasizing that dealing with security challenges at the border should be done through direct coordination between Damascus and Amman.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that there are parties seeking to harm the relations between the two countries and incite discord between them, noting that communications with the Jordanian side are ongoing, and that work is underway to form an urgent field and security committee aimed at securing the borders and preventing the recurrence of violations, and ensuring coordination regarding security movements in the border areas.
This Syrian stance comes after the Jordanian army announced the execution of airstrikes in southern Syria, claiming they targeted sites of groups it described as terrorist, following an armed attack on St. George's Church in Karak Governorate in southern Jordan, which resulted in the death of nine people and injuries to others.
The Jordanian army stated that the operation targeted sites linked to the suspects in the attack, resulting in the death and injury of several members of the targeted groups and the destruction of vehicles, but it did not announce the names of those groups or provide complete details about the sites that were bombed.
In contrast, Syrian authorities stated that the airstrikes resulted in civilian casualties in Daraa and Sweida Governorates, including children and women, while Damascus confirmed that the operation was carried out without prior notification or coordination with it, which contradicts the Jordanian narrative that spoke of coordination with the Syrian side.
The repercussions of the escalation extended to the movement of transit between the two countries, as Syrian authorities announced the closure of the Nasib border crossing with Jordan to the movement of travelers and trade in both directions, based on the field developments in Daraa Governorate and measures to protect travelers and workers at the crossing.
The Nasib crossing is considered the main land outlet for the movement of travelers and goods between Syria and Jordan, making its continued closure potentially impactful on trade and transport between the two countries, in addition to its implications for security coordination in the border region.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shabani confirmed, during talks in Aqaba on October 22, the importance of enhancing bilateral relations and developing cooperation in various fields, including security, stability, transport, energy, and water projects.
