The Yemeni Deputy Minister of Transport, Nasser Ahmed Sharif, confirmed the resumption of operations at Aden International Airport on Thursday morning, and the return of flights and maritime traffic to normal, following the completion of repairs to the damage caused by the Houthi missile attack that targeted the airport yesterday (Wednesday).
Sharif explained, in statements to "Okaz," that the technical and engineering teams and airport management, in cooperation with the relevant authorities and with support from their brothers in Saudi Arabia, rushed to address the damage and rehabilitate the affected facilities immediately after the attack, managing to complete the work within hours, which allowed for the resumption of flights and ensured the continued provision of services to travelers.
He said, "The speed of reopening Aden Airport reflects the efficiency of the national workforce and its ability to deal with emergency situations, and it embodies their determination to continue working despite the challenges," emphasizing that targeting vital facilities will not deter the Ministry of Transport from fulfilling its responsibilities in serving citizens and maintaining the continuity of public facilities.
The Yemeni Deputy Minister of Transport strongly condemned the targeting of the airport, considering that the recurrence of such attacks represents a serious violation of the sanctity of civilian facilities and a direct threat to the safety of travelers, aircraft crews, and workers, in addition to the risks it poses to the security and safety of air navigation.
He pointed out that Aden International Airport is a vital artery for citizens and a key window for their travel for purposes of treatment, study, and work, warning that targeting it goes beyond disrupting flights to deepening the suffering of Yemenis and harming their humanitarian and economic interests.
Sharif called on the international community and relevant UN and international organizations concerned with civil aviation to take a firm stance regarding these attacks and to take urgent action to provide the necessary protection for airports and civilian facilities, and to hold accountable those responsible for targeting them, stressing that the continuation of these attacks requires practical measures that go beyond statements of condemnation and denunciation.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Transport will continue its efforts, in coordination with the relevant authorities, to maintain the readiness of airports and ensure the continuity of their services, noting that the resumption of operations at Aden International Airport within hours embodies the will of the national workforce to overcome the effects of the attacks and to preserve this vital facility and ensure its continued service to citizens.
The Deputy Minister of Transport expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to the Saudi leadership for its continuous support for infrastructure projects at Aden International Airport and its contributions to the development of this vital facility through three phases, which enhances its operational readiness and contributes to improving its services and facilitating the movement of travelers, affirming that this support embodies the depth of fraternal relations between the two countries and reflects the Kingdom's keenness to support the efforts to develop the transport sector and infrastructure in Yemen.
