Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the United States and European countries to take decisive action following the death of at least 13 people and injuries to others in a Russian drone attack targeting a train station in the city of Dnipro in eastern Ukraine, describing the attack as horrific.
Zelensky stated in a social media post today (Thursday) that Russian forces targeted a platform where a suburban train and another designated for passengers were standing, noting that the death toll is likely to change. He added that Washington and European capitals must take fair and decisive steps to confront the Russian escalation.
The Ukrainian railway company reported that a Russian jet drone struck a platform at the Dnipro station, near train number 866 heading to Zaporizhzhia, while passengers remained in the area despite the announcement of a high alert. The regional administration announced that 13 people were injured, including four in critical condition and a child.
The Ukrainian railway network faces repeated threats from Russian drones; the operating company announced that it evacuated 5,831 trains of passengers during September, averaging 205 trains daily, due to security threats. Services are regularly halted when drones approach within 100 kilometers, forcing passengers to disembark and wait for the danger to pass in fields or near the railway tracks, with the longest forced stoppage during September reaching 6.5 hours.
In the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, Mayor Igor Terekhov reported that a Russian attack damaged an educational institution.
In contrast, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated today that Russian defenses shot down most of the 613 drones that were launched towards the capital overnight.
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the targeting of a cargo ship in the port of Odessa, claiming it was transporting military equipment and dual-use goods to support Ukrainian forces, in addition to continuing strikes on port infrastructure and ships that it said were operating for the benefit of the Ukrainian armed forces.
In a related development, a local ceasefire in the city of Olishki in the Kherson region came into effect today, under an agreement announced by the White House that was reached between Russia and Ukraine on October 23, mediated by Melania Trump. The agreement aims to halt military operations in the city, secure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and prepare for the evacuation of civilians through a safe corridor.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that engineering units are working to clear the roads leading to Olishki of mines and unexploded ordnance to facilitate aid access and organize the evacuation of civilians, warning of the dangers posed by such ordnance, some of which it claimed are of Western origin.
