The Yemeni government today (Saturday) held the Houthi terrorist militia responsible for the death of UN employee Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Shami in their prisons, after more than two years of his abduction and enforced disappearance, calling on the United Nations to open an investigation into the circumstances of his death and to release the remaining abducted employees.
Yemeni Minister of Human Rights, Mashdal Mohammed Omar, expressed his condemnation of the militia's execution of the employee of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Mashdal wrote on his account on "X": After more than two years of abduction and enforced disappearance by the Houthi terrorist militia, the death of UN employee Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Shami was announced today, clarifying that his family has been deprived of visiting him or communicating with him during this entire period.
He added: "We hold the Houthi militia fully responsible for his abduction, enforced disappearance, and death in their custody, while the circumstances of his death remain unknown, and his body has not yet been handed over to his family," stressing that this tragedy places the United Nations before its responsibilities towards its abducted employees and reveals the shortcomings of the efforts made to follow up on their conditions and pressure for their release.
He pointed out that the continued abduction of these individuals for more than two years, culminating in the announcement of one of their deaths without their families being able to visit or know their condition, necessitates a serious review of the approach to handling this file and taking more decisive and effective steps to secure the release of all abductees, uncover the circumstances of Al-Shami's death, ensure the return of his body, and hold those responsible accountable.
For her part, Yemeni Minister of Legal Affairs, Ishraq Al-Maqtari, stated: The UN employee was subjected to torture in Houthi prisons until his death, calling on the United Nations to open an investigation into his death in Houthi prisons.
Al-Maqtari accused the United Nations of failing to protect its employees, explaining that the conditions of detention in Houthi prisons violate international law.
She mentioned that more than seventy UN employees are still in Houthi prisons.
