U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to target the "Mountain of the Axe" site in Iran, stating that the United States still has to deal with one or two sites within the country, and that it is capable of executing that within 10 minutes, while discussing the ongoing diplomatic communications with Tehran to end the war.
Trump told reporters at his residence in Florida that the United States has destroyed the main capabilities of the Iranian military, including the navy, air force, and air defense systems, as well as a large portion of military manufacturing facilities and nuclear capabilities, according to his statements.
He added that Washington is left with only limited sites to deal with, specifically mentioning the "Mountain of the Axe," which is a fortified underground site linked to the Iranian nuclear program, located near the Natanz uranium enrichment facility.
The U.S. President stated that his country can deal with these sites "very quickly," adding that the United States is not in a hurry to launch new military action, considering what he described as the destruction of Iran's main military capabilities.
At the same time, Trump indicated that negotiations with Iran are going well, but he expressed doubt about the reliability of the Iranian position, stating that Tehran wants to reach an agreement, but has previously made agreements and then backed out.
The mention of the "Mountain of the Axe" is particularly significant, given the nature of the facility, which is believed to be located deep in the mountains near the Natanz nuclear complex, about 220 kilometers south of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Expert estimates suggest that construction of the site began in 2020, with the aim of establishing a heavily fortified underground facility.
According to satellite imagery analyses referenced in specialized studies, the site includes tunnel entrances and fortified facilities, and it is believed that it may be dedicated to activities related to uranium enrichment or the assembly of centrifuges, although the nature of the ongoing activities inside remains unresolved.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been unable to inspect the facility, and there is no confirmed independent information regarding its contents or the nature of its actual use, while Iran denies the existence of nuclear activities at the site.
Trump had previously threatened to target the facility, considering it part of Iran's nuclear infrastructure that should be prevented from being used by Tehran to develop a nuclear weapon, while the nature of the site's fortifications raises questions about the effectiveness of conventional airstrikes in destroying it.
His recent statements come amid ongoing military tensions between Washington and Tehran, alongside diplomatic efforts that have yet to result in an agreement to end the war. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that communications with Iran are ongoing, and that Trump has not made a final decision regarding the resumption of military strikes, while keeping the diplomatic option open.
In contrast, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that any new U.S. or Israeli action would be met with a wide Iranian military response, indicating the continued gap between mutual threats and efforts to reach a settlement.
