American doctor and surgeon of Egyptian descent Adam Hamawi achieved a notable electoral victory after he managed to secure a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey's twelfth district, defeating his Republican opponent Greg Mele in the elections held on Tuesday.
According to data from the Associated Press, Hamawi received 70.8% of the votes after 80% of the ballots were counted, and the agency announced his victory in the electoral race at around 8:26 PM Eastern Time.
Hamawi's victory holds special significance, not only because of his professional background as a former surgeon in the U.S. military and a volunteer in conflict areas, but also because he is the first Muslim and the first American of Arab descent to be elected to the House of Representatives from New Jersey.
From Medical Work in Gaza to Political Work
Hamawi, a member of the Democratic Party, relied significantly on his medical and humanitarian experience in conflict areas during his campaign, where he participated in medical missions to provide treatment to the injured and sick, including volunteer missions in the Gaza Strip during the Israeli war on the territory.
Hamawi worked in Gaza during 2024 and 2025 as part of medical missions organized by the Palestinian American Medical Association, in coordination with the World Health Organization, as part of efforts to provide healthcare to populations affected by the war.
His humanitarian activities were not limited to Palestinian territories, as his campaign data indicates that he volunteered to provide medical services and treat patients in several countries, including Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Jordan, Turkey, Bosnia, Haiti, Belize, and Colombia.
A Military Surgeon Who Served in Iraq
Hamawi is 57 years old and has a long professional career in the medical and military fields, having served for eight years as a surgeon in the U.S. Army, including a nine-month military mission at the 31st Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, during the Iraq War.
After completing his military service, he returned to New Jersey, where he established a private clinic for cosmetic surgery in Princeton, benefiting from his medical and academic experiences.
Egyptian Roots and Upbringing in New Jersey
Hamawi was born to an Egyptian family that immigrated to the United States when he was an infant, and he grew up in New Jersey, which later became the stage for his professional and political career.
He received his undergraduate education at Rutgers University, then attended the university's medical school, before later obtaining a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the same educational institution.
His victory reflects the growing presence of Americans of Arab descent in American political life, especially in New Jersey, which has an estimated Arab American community of about 179,000 people.
The state has also witnessed a notable increase in the number of Americans of Egyptian descent, with the electoral district that Hamawi won containing about 11,000 Americans of Arab descent, according to the Arab American Institute.
Political Positions Supporting Human Rights
On the political front, Hamawi has taken clear stances regarding U.S. foreign policy, calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, and he has expressed opposition to providing U.S. military aid to countries involved in human rights violations.
He also opposed the ongoing war with Iran, describing it as "illegal and immoral" during an interview with New Jersey Monitor last May.
Hamawi criticized what he deemed the subjugation of American policy to the interests of defense industry companies and war-supporting entities, pointing to the influence of lobbying groups and interests linked to U.S.-Israeli relations, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Domestically, his electoral program focused on expanding access to healthcare services, increasing funding for public schools, and reducing the cost of living and economic burdens on families and the working class.
A Vacant Seat Opens the Path for Hamawi
Hamawi's victory came after Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, who has represented New Jersey's twelfth district since 2015, decided not to run again in the 2026 elections.
Watson Coleman announced in November 2025 that she would not seek re-election, opening the door for competition for the seat for the first time in over a decade and paving the way for Hamawi to enter the race and win.
Second American of Egyptian Descent in Congress
With his victory, Adam Hamawi marks a political precedent in New Jersey, being the first Muslim and the first American of Arab descent to reach the U.S. House of Representatives representing the state.
He will also become the second American of Egyptian descent to serve in Congress, after Democrat George Halmi, who was appointed to the Senate in 2024 following the resignation of former Senator Bob Menendez.
Hamawi's arrival in Congress represents a new milestone in the participation of Americans of Arab and Muslim descent in American political and legislative institutions, highlighting the increasing role of professional and humanitarian experiences in shaping the electoral and political landscape within the United States.
