In a remarkable political achievement, American of Palestinian descent Abeer Qawas succeeded in winning a seat in the New York State Senate, marking a historic presence as the first hijab-wearing Palestinian American woman to reach the state legislature, in a step that enhances the presence of Americans of Arab and Palestinian descent in American political life.
In exclusive statements to "Okaz," her father, Abdul Karim Qawas, revealed details of his daughter's political journey, explaining that she is 34 years old and studied political science before turning to social work and helping immigrants, which contributed to her engagement in public work and interest in community issues.
He clarified that his daughter began working with New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani in 2017, and their professional relationship continued, noting that after Mamdani became Mayor of New York, he helped her run for a seat in the Senate, allowing her to experience the electoral process and achieve victory.
He added that his daughter comes from Palestinian origins and holds a Jordanian passport, pointing out that her political journey culminated in reaching one of the most prominent legislative positions in New York State.
From Jordan to New York
Abeer Qawas's family roots trace back to Palestine, as her family was displaced to Jordan in 1948 before moving to the United States, where Abeer was born and raised in New York. The family's experience with displacement and migration was one of the influencing factors in her inclination towards public work, alongside her father's previous experience with detention and deportation.
During her election campaign, Qawas focused on issues of healthcare, housing, transportation, and immigrant rights, calling for public resources to be directed towards the needs of the population, enhancing social justice, and improving essential services.
75% of the Votes
Qawas achieved her victory in the twelfth district in Queens, receiving about 75% of the votes, according to preliminary results after most ballots were counted.
Her victory came with the support of Mamdani's supporters and the Democratic Socialists of America, after she successfully converted her lead in the Democratic primary into a win in the electoral race.
Qawas announced her victory via her account on the "X" platform with the phrase: "We made history," referring to the significance of this milestone in her political career and what it represents as a new presence for Americans of Palestinian descent within American legislative institutions.
