While the Democrats have secured control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections, there are still results from 20 electoral districts that remain undecided, with about 551,000 votes still being counted as of this morning (Saturday), making these districts crucial in determining the size of the majority the party will achieve, according to CNN.
Gaining 40 seats from the Republicans
The Democrats have achieved their largest majority in the House in nearly 20 years, having gained more than 40 seats from the Republicans, while over 30 current officeholders have lost their seats. The party is still capable of expanding its gains and approaching the majority it recorded at the beginning of Barack Obama’s presidency, which was 257 seats, or the majority of Bill Clinton’s era, which reached 258 seats.
According to CNN data, the Democrats are leading in 8 of the 20 undecided districts, compared to 12 for the Republicans, with varying margins of lead ranging from one point to wider gaps. The closest competition is concentrated in several states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, and Minnesota, where the margins between some candidates do not exceed one point, despite the counting reaching 99% in several of these districts.
Betting on the size of the majority
In Arizona, Republican Eli Crane is leading by one point, while Colorado sees a similar lead for Democrat Eileen Laubacher over Republican Lauren Boebert. In Florida, there is close competition in four districts, where candidates are ahead by narrow margins, while Democrat Jake Johnson is leading in Minnesota's first district by less than one point. In North Carolina, competition continues in several districts with slight margins between candidates, and results from races in Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington remain pending.
The only district in Alaska is receiving special attention, as Republican Nick Begich is leading by nine points, but the state uses a ranked-choice voting system, which requires the winner to receive more than 50% of the first-choice votes; otherwise, rounds of redistribution of votes are conducted. With the counting ongoing, the focus has shifted from the identity of the party controlling the House, which the Democrats have secured, to the size of their new majority and how close it is to the historical levels recorded over the past two decades.
