The United States has imposed sanctions on five Chinese entities in connection with a case of stealing trade secrets related to artificial intelligence technologies from one of the largest American technology companies, involving a former Chinese engineer who worked for the company.
The American authorities announced that the sanctions target technology and investment entities suspected of benefiting from confidential information related to the advanced computing infrastructure used in the development and training of artificial intelligence models.
According to the authorities, the former engineer stole thousands of pages of documents and confidential technical information during his employment before establishing a company in China in 2023 to develop similar technologies, leveraging his expertise and the information he obtained.
They clarified that the sanctions include freezing assets subject to U.S. jurisdiction and imposing restrictions on financial and investment transactions with the targeted entities.
For its part, China expressed its strong opposition to the U.S. actions, considering them detrimental to the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, and called on Washington to retract them, affirming its right to take countermeasures to protect its interests.
This move comes amid escalating technological competition between Washington and Beijing, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and advanced computing.
