أثارت آشلي سانت كلير، المؤثرة المحافظة السابقة ووالدة طفلٍ من الملياردير إيلون ماسك، اهتمام الإعلام بعد كشفها عن تفاصيل جديدة تتعلق بعلاقتها به، وذلك خلال مشاركتها في مهرجان البندقية السينمائي بالتزامن مع العرض العالمي الأول لفيلم وثائقي جديد للمخرج أليكس غيبني، الحائز على جائزة الأوسكار، يتناول جوانب متعددة من حياة ماسك المهنية والشخصية وتأثيره المتنامي في التكنولوجيا والإعلام والسياسة.
وخلال مؤتمر صحفي في المهرجان، قالت سانت كلير: إنها قررت الظهور في الفيلم لرواية تجربتها الخاصة، رغم عرض مالي ضخم قالت إنه قُدم لها مقابل التزام الصمت. وأوضحت: «عُرض عليّ مبلغ 40 مليون دولار مقابل عدم التحدث»، مشيرةً إلى أن قيمة العرض دفعتها للتساؤل عن سبب رغبة جهة ما في دفع هذا المبلغ الكبير لمنعها من الكلام، وما الذي يعكسه ذلك عن أهمية ما تعرفه.
وأكدت أن المال لم يكن دافعًا كافيًا للتراجع، وأن قرارها ارتبط برغبتها في تقديم نموذج لأطفالها يقوم على قول الحقيقة وعدم وضع المكاسب المادية فوق المبادئ. وأضافت أن علاقات ماسك معقدة بطبيعتها، لكن أكثر ما يثير اهتمامها هو «علاقته بالحقيقة»، معتبرة أن هذا الجانب كان دافعًا أساسيًا لظهورها في الفيلم.
ويتضمن الوثائقي معالجة فنية لافتة لشخصية ماسك، إذ استعان غيبني بأفاتار مولد بالذكاء الاصطناعي يحاكيه بهدف إجراء مقابلة افتراضية معه ضمن أحداث الفيلم. وأوضح المخرج أن الشخصية الرقمية لم تُبنَ على تصريحات مختلقة، بل على أقوال حقيقية لماسك في مناسبات مختلفة، وأن استخدامها جاء كاختيار فني ساخر يعكس أفكار ماسك نفسه حول طبيعة الواقع وإمكانية أن يعيش البشر داخل محاكاة متقدمة.
ويرى غيبني أن تقديم نسخة رقمية من ماسك يبرز التباين بين إنجازاته الفعلية وبين الصورة التي يصوغها عن نفسه وعن مستقبل التكنولوجيا، قائلًا إن الهدف هو إظهار «الواقع الحقيقي لما أنجزه ماسك مقابل الطابع غير الواقعي لسرديته الخاصة». وأكد فريق العمل الحصول على الموافقات القانونية اللازمة قبل استخدام الصورة الرمزية.

During a press conference at the festival, St. Clair stated that she decided to appear in the film to share her own experience, despite a huge financial offer she said was made to her in exchange for remaining silent. She explained, "I was offered $40 million to not speak," noting that the size of the offer made her question why someone would want to pay such a large amount to prevent her from talking, and what that reflects about the importance of what she knows.
She confirmed that money was not a sufficient motive to back down, and her decision was tied to her desire to set an example for her children based on telling the truth and not placing financial gains above principles. She added that Musk's relationships are inherently complex, but what interests her most is "his relationship with the truth," considering this aspect a primary motivation for her appearance in the film.
The documentary features a striking artistic portrayal of Musk, as Gibney employed an AI-generated avatar that mimics him to conduct a virtual interview within the film's narrative. The director clarified that the digital character was not built on fabricated statements, but rather on Musk's actual words from various occasions, and its use was a satirical artistic choice that reflects Musk's own ideas about the nature of reality and the possibility of humans living within an advanced simulation.
Gibney believes that presenting a digital version of Musk highlights the contrast between his actual achievements and the image he crafts of himself and the future of technology, stating that the goal is to show "the real reality of what Musk has accomplished versus the unrealistic nature of his own narrative." The production team confirmed that they obtained the necessary legal approvals before using the avatar.
The film also addresses Musk's acquisition of the platform (X) -formerly Twitter- and the changes that have occurred in its policies and algorithmic operations. Gibney stated that Musk modified the algorithms in a way that allowed more extreme and critical content to gain greater visibility, at the expense of what is known as balanced public discourse.
