The cryptocurrency sector has faced a new legislative blow after the "Clarity" bill stumbled in the U.S. Senate, receiving 50 votes in favor versus 49, falling short by 10 votes of the required threshold for passage.
Four Republican members joined Democrats in voting against the bill, which aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets and define the legal rules governing the operations of trading and investment companies. The vote puts the legislation on a delayed path, coinciding with Congress's preparation to enter its recess before the midterm elections in November. The result quickly reflected on the markets; Bitcoin dropped by more than 5%, marking its largest daily decline since June, while shares of companies linked to cryptocurrencies fell by up to 10%.
The failure of the bill brings the state of regulatory uncertainty back to the forefront of the sector, with digital asset policies remaining subject to the actions of regulatory bodies and executive decisions. Investors are concerned about changes in rules due to shifting political trends or judicial rulings, forcing companies into a new phase of caution and vigilance.
