The attempt of a Tunisian man to seek magic that he believes has affected his wife ended in his arrest, after security authorities caught him with four other individuals while digging up graves in a cemetery, in an incident that sparked widespread outrage among the local residents.
The incident took place in the city of Hajeb El Ayoun, which is part of the Kairouan Governorate in central Tunisia, where security forces intervened after receiving a report from a local resident who claimed to have seen a group of people digging inside the cemetery during the night. According to initial information, the authorities arrested five individuals, including a woman and a person suspected of practicing exorcism, while the relevant authorities began their investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident and determine the roles of all those involved.
Walid Al-Hajji, a representative from the Al-Ala and Hajeb El Ayoun district, explained that one of the arrested individuals is not a resident of the area and had lost his previous wife years ago before marrying again, noting that he believes his current wife has been subjected to magical practices for a long time.
He added that this belief led him, according to available information, to seek the help of a person suspected of practicing exorcism and to go to the cemetery in search of alleged magical items that he believed were buried in one of the graves. The nature of the involvement of the other arrested individuals or the full motivations that led them to be present in the cemetery and participate in the digging process is still unclear.
The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation among the residents of Hajeb El Ayoun, who considered the digging of graves a violation of the sanctity of the deceased and an assault on the sacredness of cemeteries, demanding accountability for those responsible for the incident.
On the other hand, Al-Hajji emphasized the importance of waiting for the results of the security and judicial investigations before drawing final conclusions, stressing the necessity of respecting the sanctity of cemeteries and combating such practices, while investigations continue to reveal all the details of the case and its true motivations.
