An American family has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing the chatbot ChatGPT of providing guidance on reducing medication dosages without medical supervision, in an incident the family claims contributed to the death of their 31-year-old daughter.
According to a report published by the New York Post, Bowen Wan, a former software engineer at Amazon, suffered from epilepsy and was taking lamotrigine to control her seizures. She turned to ChatGPT, which was operating on the GPT-4o model, to discuss the side effects of the medication, particularly her concerns about its impact on her ability to speak and focus during job interviews.
The lawsuit states that the chatbot suggested she gradually reduce her dosages to the point of stopping the medication altogether, and the family accused it of encouraging her not to inform her doctors about the changes. They added that Wan mentioned during the conversations symptoms she experienced while reducing the dosages, without receiving, according to the complaint, adequate guidance to seek medical help.
According to the case, Wan died from what is known as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, while the family noted that the decreased level of medication in her body was among the circumstances preceding her death.
For its part, OpenAI described the case as deeply painful, noting that it pertains to an earlier version of the system, and emphasized that ChatGPT does not replace specialized medical care.
