London Mayor Sadiq Khan is facing allegations of covering up legal violations that led to fines for approximately 66,000 drivers totaling $8.85 million, due to speed cameras that were found to have legal procedural flaws.
The incident dates back to October 2023, when Transport for London reduced the speed limit on the A20 road from 70 to 40 miles per hour, coinciding with the installation of average speed cameras as part of safety measures following incidents related to water accumulation.
The measures resulted in fines being issued to thousands of drivers, which included a £100 penalty and a deduction of three points from their driving licenses, amid complaints about the lack of clarity in the signs announcing the speed change.
The Telegraph revealed that the decision was signed by an official who did not possess the necessary legal authority, a fact that was reinforced after one driver was acquitted in court last month, which could open the door for new appeals to overturn the fines.
The case has also sparked political controversy after Sadiq Khan used his powers to thwart a decision to conduct an independent investigation into the incident, according to the newspaper, while a spokesperson for him denied any cover-up, affirming the legality of the actions taken.
For its part, Transport for London rejected accusations of withholding evidence and violations, stating that the recent court ruling does not set a binding precedent for all cases, and that it will support the Metropolitan Police in facing upcoming appeals.
These developments come amid calls for accountability from officials and clarification regarding the fate of the fines paid by drivers, as a traffic issue has turned into a legal and political crisis in the British capital.
