Five people, including two children, were found alive near Fanning Island in Kiribati after nearly three months of being lost in the Pacific Ocean, after their small boat was swept approximately 5,400 kilometers from Micronesia.
A One-Hour Trip Turns into 3 Months
Nine people had left Morilo Island in Micronesia on July 30, on a sea trip to Rou Island that was supposed to take only about one hour.
However, a storm hit the boat and threw it off course, before it was reported missing after failing to reach its destination.
Search Lasted 10 Days
The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search operation that lasted 10 days and covered about 85,700 square kilometers of ocean, without finding the boat or its passengers, before suspending the search efforts.
After nearly three months, local residents found five of the boat's passengers near Fanning Island in Kiribati, about 5,400 kilometers east of their starting point. The fate of the other four passengers remains unknown.

Dehydration and Malnutrition
Health officials stated that the five survivors were suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition when they were found, and they were provided with intravenous fluids, while their health condition began to improve.
The survivors are receiving care on the island, as Micronesian authorities have begun communicating with the government of Kiribati to arrange their return to their homeland.
The survivors requested to maintain their privacy and have not publicly disclosed details of how they survived for three months in the open ocean.
