A person was killed and two others were seriously injured after a small helicopter crashed into the waters of Biscayne Bay near Miami, Florida, yesterday (Wednesday) during a flight to photograph boats in the area.
U.S. authorities reported that the helicopter, a Robinson R44 II, fell into the water near Bill Baggs State Park off Key Biscayne, with three people on board.
Miami-Dade County police explained that rescue teams, with the participation of the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection, rushed to the scene of the accident, where one of the individuals in the area attempted to rescue one of the helicopter passengers and transport them to shore, but the passenger died despite resuscitation efforts.
They added that emergency teams were able to rescue the other two individuals and transport them to a specialized medical center for treating serious injuries, noting that their condition is critical but stable.
Aerial footage showed the helicopter overturned in the water, with the emergency floats attached beneath it visible above the water's surface.
Authorities confirmed that the cause of the accident is still unknown, while the National Transportation Safety Board, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, has begun an investigation to determine the circumstances of the helicopter's crash.
