Recent scientific research has revealed that taking a quiet break for a few minutes after learning new information may help the brain to consolidate and retain it for a longer period, without the need for repeated studying or additional mental effort.
The research indicated that dedicating a break of between 8 and 12 minutes after receiving information could enhance the ability to remember it, a phenomenon scientifically known as the "wakeful rest effect," which gives the brain a chance to process and solidify information away from distractions.
According to a report published by the Washington Post, an analysis conducted by researchers from the University of Notre Dame concluded that this practice could benefit various age groups, with a greater effect observed in older adults and individuals suffering from progressive memory loss, which affects the ability to form new memories.
Nelson Cowan, an emeritus professor of psychological sciences at the University of Missouri, explained that information does not immediately transform into stable memories upon receipt; rather, it requires a period of time to become entrenched.
For his part, Andrew Budson, a professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, pointed out that the process of memory consolidation is not limited to sleep but can also begin during quiet rest periods after learning.
Results of 51 Studies
The analysis, published last January in the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, was based on a review of 51 studies examining the effect of wakeful rest on healthy young individuals, older adults, and those with memory loss.
The results showed that participants who took a quiet break lasting between 8 and 12 minutes after receiving new information retained a greater amount of it compared to individuals who immediately engaged in mentally demanding activities.
The benefits were more pronounced among older adults and individuals with memory impairment, and included memory tests for names, stories, images, faces, and navigation methods.
One study also showed that taking just six minutes of quiet rest could help individuals with memory loss improve their recall ability.
How Does Rest Help in Consolidating Information?
Researchers explained that the brain continuously receives large amounts of information, but converting it into long-term memories requires changes in the connections between neurons.
While repetition and review are crucial for strengthening these connections, quiet rest may help to automatically solidify memories without the need for deliberate retrieval of information.
Conversely, immediately transitioning to browsing social media, watching movies, or engaging in activities that require mental focus may interfere with the process of information consolidation.
5 Tips to Improve Memory
Experts provided five tips to make the most of breaks and enhance recall ability:
1- Focus during learning: Listen attentively during meetings and lectures, taking notes on key points instead of trying to record every word.
2- Stay away from your phone: Avoid browsing social media and using electronic devices during breaks to minimize mental distractions.
3- Rest immediately after learning: Allocate 8 to 12 minutes for quietness right after finishing receiving information, rather than postponing the break for hours.
4- Test memory later: Try to recall information without referring to notes, as repeated self-testing helps strengthen memories.
5- Set aside time for relaxation: Give the brain periods of quiet away from continuous activities, which helps it process and consolidate information.
